A fascinating read
Format: Kindle
I found Modern Africa to be a fascinating read, because, having grown up in the 80’s, places such as Libya and Ethiopia were always in the news, but I didn’t understand their backstories. Modern Africa does a great job of laying out these stories, but in a way that doesn’t overwhelm the reader. I look forward to reading more from the author! They do a great job of making history relevant and make me want to learn more!

Quick Read - Highlights Version
Format: Kindle
The author does a decent job of overviewing what took place during this time period. You will learn how many different events connect and see what caused various developments in Africa to take place. However, it was not as in depth as I would have liked and certainly could not cover everything that transpired during this time. Probably a decent survey book for high school students, but as an adult, I would have liked to see more elaboration and depth for each segment. 124 pages is a relatively short amount of space to cover so many topics. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Modern Africa is a land of mystery and intrigue
Format: Kindle
African history has truly as many facets as the multifaceted diamond. There are 54 countries in Africa but there are many more cultures. I found this book to be extremely interesting and it covered Africa from many sides. The book started by exploring the question of slavery in Africa. The history of slavery began long before the Europeans started transporting slaves to Europe and their colonies. The African tribes treated their slaves better than they were treated by the Europeans. The Europeans felt that the Africans were inferior and that it was their duty to colonize and Europeanize the African societies. They divided the continent of Africa among the major powers of Europe. Because of the colonization of Africa when Europe went to war they expected to draw manpower from their colonial possessions for the military. With this the colonial citizens were responsible for providing soldiers both in the European and the African theaters in the world wars. Africa has aiso been the theater of many civil Wars and also ethnic cleansings. This book also tells about some of the main revolutionaries and dictators that have led the countries of Africa. It is also a guide to the history of the relations of the United States with your African peoples. It will help you understand why some of the people mistrust the motives of the United States government when they interact with the different governments of Africa. African religions have always been interesting to me and this book shares some of those African religions and also the history of the Christian and Islamic religious pushing to Africa. It also has a chapter dealing with Africa and their politics in the theater of World affairs. This is a book I would love to have had while I was teaching world history. It has been researched and gives a greater understanding to what is going on in Africa and the history. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in world affairs. It is a great addition to any one who is interested both in world history and in the history of Africa.
